Nestled in the Norfolk countryside, this former 25m2 carthouse was reimagined as a flexible retreat, for both patients and holiday makers to escape and recover in nature. The timber outbuilding was redesigned into a multifunctional space, that can be transformed from physio clinic to holiday chalet.

The client wanted to create a retreat set within their beautiful gardens in Norfolk, that was a clinic during the week and then could be transformed into a holiday let and space to host friends and family at weekends and holidays; all within a 25m2 former Norfolk carthouse. To achieve this, space saving design was combined with flexibility to create a small space with maximum functionality.

A new mezzanine floor was installed, accessible via a custom compact ‘Lisbon’ staircase, which uses minimal floor space whilst creating a place for a shower room and additional storage beneath. The ground floor was then divided into a double height waiting space which doubles as a kitchenette on one side and treatment room or bedroom for holidaymakers on the other. A series of new openings using reclaimed windows flood the carthouse with natural light and give it a sense of openness despite its compact size. The large carthouse double doors were retained, allowing both sides of the ground floor to open out into the beautiful surrounding gardens .
